Most plants today are located in sanitary landfills, but the sector anticipates growth in the use of residues from sugar and ethanol production.
— The biomethane market is relatively new, but it’s developing at a fast pace, driven by the growing commitment of companies — especially large corporations — to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in a definitive way and actively contribute to the fight against global warming — says Marcel Jorand, CEO of Gás Verde.
PARTNERSHIP IN ACTION
The company will also retain half of the production of a joint venture it formed in partnership with Orizon VR, involving two biomethane units located in sanitary landfills in São Gonçalo and Nova Iguaçu.
Orizon VR operates sanitary landfills — 17 “ecoparks” across 12 states.
Producing biomethane from the gases released by waste decomposition is part of the company’s business model. Orizon VR has a subsidiary, BioE, to operate the plants — and it will be responsible for the two joint venture units with Gás Verde.
— There was already market demand, and then we additionally had the “Fuel of the Future,” which is boosting the sector and bringing in new players such as Petrobras and other fuel producers — says Milton Pilão Jr., president of Orizon VR.
