Regionalization of landfills could reduce the number of open dumps in the country by 30%. According to organizations and experts, a consortium of municipalities would be the first step toward complying with legislation and eliminating or reducing the number of active dumpsites in the country.
The Brazilian Association of Waste and Environment (Abrema) estimates that a shortcut could be taken to reduce the number of active dumps in the country, a chronic environmental and social issue. “We estimate that more than 30% of them could be eradicated simply by using the sanitary landfills already in place,” says André Galvão, technical superintendent at Abrema. This is known as regionalization, with a single landfill serving multiple municipalities.
